The basics: Marble is a natural stone composed of calcium carbonate; it’s in the same stone family as limestone and travertine. Color variations occur in marble due to mineral impurities in the stone. Slabs, rather than tiles, are typically used for countertops, where the dramatic veining can be displayed.
Bio-Glass, another recycled glass countertop material with Cradle to Cradle certification, has an ethereal, translucent appearance, as it’s made of 100 percent glass. As with all glass-based counters, it’s not knife friendly, so keep your cutting boards handy.
When it came to creating the room’s look, the owners began by selecting a large professional range. Graver then worked with them to design a kitchen around the range that’s modern and a bit surprising.
Use the space above. Take advantage of being able to use the space above the island by adding suspended storage, where you can display a matching pan collection or your best stemware. You can also experiment with lighting elements, or if you’ve decided to install a stovetop with overhead venting you can use the space for the range hood.
